This 2.5 day workshop was organized by the International RDC/TMD Consortium Network and the Orofacial Pain Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain. The planning committee was comprised of Jean-Paul Goulet (Laval University, Canada), Thomas List (Malmö University, Sweden), Frank Lobbezoo (ACTA, Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Richard Ohrbach (University at Buffalo, US), and Peter Svensson (University of Aarhus, Denmark).
Workshop participation was by invitation based on the particular disciplines of interest, which included clinical pain, radiology, psychology, sociology, and neuroscience. We also addressed representation within the field, which included the Consortium Network, the Orofacial Pain Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain, the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the European Academy of Craniomandibular Disorders, and the International Headache Society. Eleven countries were represented.
The workshop members, who were divided into three workgroups, provided expert knowledge regarding the disorders comprising TMD broadly, pain history, self-report instrument assessment, and clinical neuroscience.
The goals of this workshop were to (1) finalize extended disorders from the DC/TMD and identify a set of less common TMDs, for which there is sufficient evidence allowing us to operationalize the diagnostic criteria for these conditions; (2) expand assessment methods and measures for each of Axis I and Axis II in order to facilitate the diagnosis and prognosis of TMD, and (3) create a third Axis for additional measures (e.g., genetics and neuroscience data), thus explanding the present dual-axis system.
The workshop was extremely productive. The post-workshop committee is comprised of Brian Cairns, Thomas List, Frank Lobbezoo, Ambra Michelotti, Richard Ohrbach, Chris Peck, and Peter Svensson, who will provide oversight for the development of the RDC/TMDv2 manuscript. All participants (See Program for listing) will contribute to the final manuscript.
This workshop was sponsored by the IADR, RDC/TMD Consortium, Orofacial Pain SIG, and Canadian Institute for Health Research.
